Tooth Coloured Restorations

Restorations or ‘Fillings' treat new and recurring areas of decay and replace/rebuild missing tooth structure.

Tooth Coured RestorationsAll fillings have a limited lifespan and eventually require replacement.  The average lifespan for fillings is around 5 to 7 years.  However research shows that fillings performed under optimal conditions such as under rubber dam, can last 10 to 15 years. Lifespan  will also vary depending on a number of factors including size of the filling, home care and diet, strength of remaining tooth structure and pressures on the teeth from clenching/grinding known as bruxing  and of course, how well the filling is done in the first place.

This practice uses only 'state of the art' bonded composite tooth coloured fillings. Bonded composite fillings not only look nicer than old-fashioned silver amalgam fillings but technically they are a major advance. Since they are bonded to the tooth they help strengthen the tooth and the bonded seal also makes it more difficult for the tooth to decay again. Most sized cavities can be successfully filled using bonded tooth coloured fillings.

We use rubber dam (a thin latex sheet through which the teeth protrude) during our restoration treatment.  Only the rubber dam completely isolates the teeth in the operating field from saliva, humidity, bleeding and tissue fluids. This is especially important when working with the new age tooth-coloured composite resin filling materials which are seriously affected by moisture contamination.

Composite resins restorations placed without rubber dam are at serious risk of moisture contamination leading to recurrent decay and will almost certainly have a reduced lifespan.  The rubber dam technique allows the dentist to work in a clean field with better visibility – it saves valuable time, protects the patient from injury and guards the dentist against infection.
