Root Canal Treatment

Endodontic or “Root Canal” Treatment is used to save teeth that, in the past, would have been extracted.  It is a very common treatment used to restore teeth where the pulp or nerve has been injured or diseased.  Saving your natural tooth is often the best option compared to more costly or inefficient substitutes.

Root canal treatment removes the infected nerve, cleaning and disinfecting the canals and replaces it with a filling material.  The treatment is performed using local anaesthetic and so is quite comfortable.

Several visits are required to treat the tooth.  Each visit may be a few weeks apart to allow time for the tooth to heal.  X-rays are taken at various times to aid the dentist in the successful treatment.

At the end of the treatment, a permanent filling is placed on the tooth.  When there is insufficient tooth structure remaining and the filling is large, the tooth is quite weak and can break.  The dentist may recommend a crown to protect the tooth from breaking or splitting.
