Emergency Care

Avoiding possible problems

Emergency CareAt our practice, we take great to care to diagnose potential problems at your initial appointment.  With a comprehensive treatment plan we can plan your care to address any issues which may cause you problems in the future.
There are instances when you may develop pain, infection or some other tooth problem and require immediate attention.  We ask all our patients to advise us as soon as they feel any discomfort, sensitivity or have any concerns following treatment.  Often prompt attention can avoid emergency situations.

Advice in an emergency

Call our practice (please leave a message on our answering machine after hours) to receive prompt attention or advice.  Please rest assured that we will take care of your concern quickly and have you comfortable again as soon as possible.

Fractured tooth after trauma

  • Gently rinse mouth with warm water to keep the area clean
  • Apply a cold compress to the face if there is swelling
  • See a doctor if there are any cuts or lacerations
  • Seek dental treatment asap

Knocked-out tooth

  • Hold the tooth by the crown and not the root
  • Rinse the tooth in water to clean it but do not scrub or remove tissue fragments
  • If possible, try to put the tooth back into the socket
  • Otherwise place the tooth in a glass of milk for transport
  • Seek dental treatment immediately

Possible jaw trauma or fracture

  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Seek medical attention asap  for fracture (hospital emergency department)
  • Or seek dental treatment/assessment

Severe toothache

  • To reduce pain to hot food/drink – sip cold drink or ice
  • To reduce pain to cold – rinse with warm water
  • Gently clean or rinse around the area to remove food debris
  • Take pain relief medication such as Nurofen or Panadol
  • Over the counter ointments containing cloves can also be effective in the short-term
  • Never apply aspirin directly to the gum or tissues in the area – it can ‘burn’ these delicate areas.
