Initial Examination

We begin with a 30 - 45 minute full examination and assessment of your dental and oral health. The examination includes:

  • assessing and charting the health and function of the teeth, gums and soft tissues
  • the occlusion or ‘bite’ and any orthodontic concerns such as crowding or malocclusion
  • possible radiographs (xrays) to check for hidden problems such as decay
  • full photographic records to document and show the current condition of the teeth

Important note about Xrays

Regular xrays (every two years or so) generally start from the teenage years but in some cases they may be required earlier to look for decay and other hidden problems.  Xrays show areas of the teeth where the dentist cannot physically see – such as the nerve, in between tight teeth, under existing fillings and under the bone or gum line.

It especially important to note that unlike adult teeth, decay can progress very quickly if left undetected, affecting the nerve sooner than we would expect in an adult tooth.

Treatment Discussion

Following the examination, Dr Thai will discuss with the patient and parent the findings and his recommendations, which cover:

  • any dental disease present such as decay or gum infections (such as gingivitis)
  • possible future issues such as demineralisation (early signs of decay), missing or crowded teeth
  • home care advice: brushing, flossing, use of additional rinses or specialty brushes
  • dietary advice: important information on reducing sugar and acid in the diet to prevent decay and erosion
  • treatment to restore or repair decayed teeth
  • recommendations on preventive treatments such as sealants, cleaning or mouthguards
  • recommendations and referral to specialists such as Pediatric dentists or Orthodontists
  • Outline costs and alternative treatment options available.

Treatment Plan

All the information you need to make informed decisions about your child’s treatment and care, including costs and insurance item numbers,  will be given to you after your examination with your treatment plan and fee estimate.  Dr Thai, Lily and Renata are available to answer any queries or explain treatment further in person, on the phone or via email.

Toddlers and Children

From the age of 3, most children have all their baby (deciduous)teeth through and so we recommend starting dental visits from the age of 2 years.  Taking care of baby teeth is important as some could be in the mouth until 12 years. Between the ages of 6 and 12 years, your child will have lost those baby teeth and will have 28 permanent adult teeth.

Teenage Years

The permanant adult teeth start erupting at age 6 through to early teenage years.  By the time they are 12, your child will have 28 adult teeth.  The third molars or wisdom teeth come through from about 17 years.

Teenage years are often accompanied with less than ideal dietary habits and inadequate home care.  Many teenagers also under go orthodontic treatment wearing braces for up to 18 months or so.  Problems can arise when plaque build up, sugar or acid is consumed frequently and/or difficulty with cleaning teeth occurs.   Healthy gums and decay-free teeth can be acheived with the right advice and ongoing examinations and professional cleaning. Regular visits help to educate, motivate and prevent dental disease.
